Have you ever seen two things that are so opposite that they are almost the same? That tends to be the way of two side-by-side sport utility vehicles-the John Deere Gator and the BRP Can-Am Commander.

The Gator is a hard-working utility vehicle that as been packed with sports features. The Commander is a hard-playing side-by-side capable of performing all the duties of a workhorse.

Here's a quick look at each and what they have to offer respectively.

John Deere Gator 4x4 XUV

John Deere Gator 4x4 XUVThe perfect definition of versatility is when you can turn a tool into a toy. And with the new John Deere Gator 4X4 XUV, what works hard for you five days a week can help you relieve stress on the weekends. And there are three model options you can chose from-the 825i, 625i and 855D.

With money tight right now, it's great to have a vehicle that can earn its keep while helping you keep your sanity.

Each of these three models is offered in three distinct color packages: the John Deere green and yellow, olive and black or the Realtree Hardwoods pattern.

Although these models have similar features, there is one major feature that is very distinctive on each model-the power. The 625i boasts a 617cc liquid-cooled twin 4-cycle engine. The 825i features an 812cc three-cylinder automotive-style engine that puts out 50 hp. The 855D features an 854cc liquid-cooled 3-cyclinder 4-cycle diesel engine.

So depending on your fuel preference (and don't be lured into thinking the diesel version is all grunt and no zip; it offers the most powerful, fastest accelerating diesel in its class), you can have the perfect vehicle for your job requirements. Now, knowing what you can have that's different, here's what you get that is the same.

Power Package

Top speeds vary from 44 mph with the 825i, to 30 mph with the 625i, with the 855D getting 32 mph.

Advanced clutching with a tighter belt provides increased acceleration without compromising smooth low-end speeds and efficient engine braking, which allows you to crawl down inclines without complete dependence on your brakes.

The Gators feature a two-range CVT transmission for excellent low-speed towing capabilities. The long-lasting front and rear hydraulic service brakes with mechanical rear park brake provide an automotive style brake system for greatest reliability and smoother engagement.

A hydroformed frame features unmatched strength and durability.

As for the ride, the independent rear suspension provides ride quality even in severe terrain. More than eight inches of suspension travel soaks up the bumps while allowing the 25-inch tires to maintain traction to the surface. It also has excellent ground clearance.

On-demand, 4-wheel drive gives you total control. You can either select a completely turf-friendly mode of operation or press the switch and get on-demand 4-wheel drive for climbing the toughest trails. A rear traction assist locks the rear drive wheels together to push through tough spots.

All models feature a standard integrated 2-inch rear receiver hitch plus attractive styling with integrated features such as cup holders, 12-volt outlet, glove box, storage compartment, and fuel gauge.
