ATVs Added To RCMP Tire-Tread Database

Published in the September 2011 Issue September 2011

We found this bit of news on Canada.com a little while ago. It states that criminals in rural Canada who prefer making their getaways on all-terrain vehicles may have to start covering their tracks.

A Yukon-based RCMP forensic-identification expert who created a national tire-tread database-credited last year with helping police nab sex-killer Russell Williams-has now expanded that database to include tire treads from ATVs.

In his spare time, Sgt. James Giczi gathers tire manufacturers' brochures, takes high-resolution photos of the tire treads, enhances them using Photoshop software and inputs them into a database.
