A Hail Of A Good Time On The Top Of The World

July 2017 Feature Web Exclusive

Having lived in the West nearly all our lives, we know the weather can be a little unpredictable in the mountains. Thunderstorms are not all that rare in the afternoons and even an occasional hailstorm pops up now and again. But these storms usually pass fairly quickly.

That happened to us on our Friday ride at the Rally in the Pines in Mackay, ID. The day started out warm and sunny at the lower elevations but as we led our group on the Top Of The World ride and gained elevation, the weather changed.

It didn’t change real quickly but it was fairly fast. It started with rain and then came the hail. We drove out of the storm as we wound our way around the mountains but then drove back into it. Again and again.

We did have a few breaks but for the most part we were wet all day long.

Our hardy band of riders hung in there though and we eventually made our way up Stewart Canyon to a beautiful unnamed lake. That was the crown jewel of our day’s ride after first climbing the Windy Devil and then making our way up to another ridge top that afforded amazing views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

Despite Mother Nature’s efforts to dampen (quite literally) our ride, it was a great 40-mile plus ride in the White Knob Mountains.

We got the day started off on the right foot by hosting a pancake breakfast for Rally in the Pines attendees. Dirt Toys Magazine staff showed up in full force to feed hundreds of folks getting ready for the day’s rides.
