Fourth Of July Ride, Trail Maintenance

July 2016 Feature By Mark Bourbeau, test rider for Dirt Toys Magazine

A group of us spent Independence Day riding the Percy Lake trail in north-central Colorado on ATVs and putting in some work clearing trees.

The trail starts off of the Hidden Lakes road and goes up to the CDT, which is also known as the Wyoming trail. We then rode north on the CDT until snow drifts turned us around just south of Buffalo Pass.

Being the good stewards of the recreations (ATVing and snowmobiling) that we participate in, we removed 85 windfall trees averaging 12 inches in diameter from the 5-plus miles of the CDT we rode.

(Note the professional grade chainsaws strapped to our ponies.)

This is a lot more work than most are willing to do in order to keep these trails open for all users. We’ve been battling this problem for six years in this area and we know that a couple of our trails would have been closed by now if not for us and some other recreators who do care.

We do not want to see closures due to poor management.
