I’m not exactly sure when, but at some point the word “compromise” became a bad word in the minds of a lot of consumers. Probably because guys go into an auto dealership wanting a truck, but end up “compromising” with the wife and leave in a mini-van.
But the Polaris Ranger 4x4 570 Full Size is actually a real compromise for those wanting a true utility side-by-side but also wanting a little versatility to take on sporty rides. It really does give you the best of both worlds, which helps explain why the Ranger line is so popular for multi-purpose riders.
First Glance
The Ranger Full Size easily passed the eye test with those of us who had gathered and agreed to try out the latest side-by-side from Polaris. The third seat upfront translates to not only more room, but the wider stance gives you more stability on the trail with plenty of clearance below (more than 10 inches). First impressions are everything and the more we looked, the more we liked as we continued to find and appreciate the different features and amenities this side-by-side has to offer.
As far as instrumentation, the Ranger includes a digital gauge, speedometer, odometer, tachometer, trip meter and more, including a DC outlet. For taller riders the head room is very much appreciated, plus having a tilt steering wheel allows all drivers of any size to get comfortable.
The mesh side doors simply clip at the top, are easy to use and are a nice added touch as well. In fact, at first glance we seemed to only focus on those features that help make it a sporty side-by-side, while forgetting about the utility bed in the back.
The bed dumps, which is always a great feature when doing work, but there are actually even more advantages to this design. The added benefit
is it gives you better access to work or service the engine below, so changing your oil filter or checking your dipstick has never been easier.
Plus we’re guessing the weight distribution is better with the 44 hp engine more centered. With great storage under the seats as well as other great features, we liked what we saw and it was time to hit the trail.
Test Ride
The first thing we noticed was the benefit of the seatbelt. No, we didn’t hit a tree. Thanks for your vote of confidence. When we were getting a feel for it before going on our first long ride we sheepishly admit we weren’t wearing seatbelts. If the driver seatbelt isn’t clipped, it actually limits the power. We knew this was a utility model, but when we were only reaching speeds around 20 mph we were starting to question what we got ourselves into with this test. Then we slapped on our helmets and gear (and our seatbelts) and found a whole new world of power. With a top speed around 40 mph, that was more than enough to give us a fun and sporty ride.
“This is a great all-around model where sport meets utility,” said Eric Ashford after testing it out for the week. “It’s smooth on the trails as well as safe; we never felt out of control during our rides.”
For experienced riders such as Clare Tobler, who currently owns a 2007 version of a competing brand, he not only appreciated the third seat, but wishes his throttle controls were on the dash too.
“Having the controls on the dash is nice, plus a real space-saver,” said Tobler. “This Ranger shifts smooth and is a lot quieter that mine, plus I love how the engine holds you back on those steep declines as you’re coming off a hill.”
Sporty feel, room for three and a large bed box capable of hauling up to 800 lbs., you really can have it all with this Ranger 570 Full Size.
“There are a lot of reasons to like this RANGER, in fact, there isn’t anything about my current side-by-side that I like better,” added Tobler.
