First Ride: Arctic Cat XR 700 Limited EPS/XR 550 XT EPS

January 2015 Powersport News

After seeing Arctic Cat’s new lineup of ATVs—the XR—last fall in Las Vegas at the company’s dealer show, we’ve been anxious to throw a leg over one and take it for a spin.

That finally happened earlier this week in Moab, UT, where we rode the XR 700 and XR 550. These machines rock on the rocks. (Sorry about our late report on the ride but we had some serious travel issues on United Airlines and just couldn’t get it done sooner.)

We’ll have a full report in an upcoming issue of Dirt Toys Magazine but for now, here are some highlights of the new ATVs, more specifically the XR 700. (Hint: We liked it.)

  • All-new SpeedRack II composite rack system is constructed from extra durable plastic with a rubberized anti-slip TPE surface mold, which provides a stronger and more stable payload platform.
  • Front and rear SpeedRack II racks feature the new slide-and-lock SpeedLock and Speed Buckle attachment system for integrated accessories, as well as convenient integrated spots for hook-type accessory attachment.
  • New chassis design features a 52-in. wheelbase (compared to the previous 50-in. wheelbase) for improved ride quality, yet with an overall length that’s more than 1-in. shorter.
  • The engine has been mounted further forward in the chassis, which results in 3 inches of additional foot space in the footwell.
  • New reduced-effort steering features a steering post angle that has been moved rearward by 5 degrees for easier-to-turn cornering.
  • New dual, rear LED taillight system for powerful lighting performance.
  • Revised rider position places the feet approximately 2-in. closer together for improved comfort.
  • New geometry on the double A-arm front and rear suspension provides more shock travel in relation to suspension travel, delivering an improved ride over all terrain. It also features an integrated rear swaybar for enhanced feel.
  • New full-LED headlight system features LED projector-beam headlights and LED accent lights for the strongest and most effective lighting output and bulb longevity. (Limited model)
  • New LED/Halogen headlight system features a combination of halogen headlights with LED accents for excellent lighting performance. (XT EPS)
  • The airbox has been relocated under the seat, making it more accessible, with a round motorcycle-style filter with a replaceable paper element that is easier to service.
  • New multi-function digital gauge now located on the dash, rather than the handlebars.
  • New engine sound reduction system featuring a rubber-isolated outer cover and new gaskets that deliver an 8 dBA reduction in operation sound.
  • The 333-cu. in. (1.44 gallon) storage box has been moved to the rear of the machine, underneath the rear fenders for simplified access.
  • New closed-loop EFI system with catalyst exhaust provides 25 percent improved fuel economy and lower CO emissions for optimal performance in all conditions.
  • Dual integrated front tow hooks offer more useful attachment options.
  • New cast aluminum wheels (XT & Limited).
