Product Review: Real Cookin' With Camp Chef

Published in the September 2013 Issue September 2013 Powersport News

You can eat on your break during your ride or you can really eat. That’s exactly what we did during our ride/camping excursion in late June with Brooks Hansen from Camp Chef.

Camp Chef is an outdoor cooking equipment company that makes cooking outdoors, well, a lot easier and a whole lot more fun. The company's product line has more than 100 products, including everything from stoves, smokers, pizza ovens, Dutch ovens, skillets, fire pits and even an outdoor movie screen. Peruse Camp Chef's product catalog or look at all their products online and you'll see it has everything you need to make any outdoor experience more pleasurable.

For our camping expedition, Hansen brought Camp Chef’s Pro 60 Stove and two Dutch ovens to cook a special recipe of potatoes and chicken for us. The Pro 60 Stove is from Camp Chef's top-of-the-line 14-inch cooking series. It is one of Consumer Digest’s best buys. It has two 30,000 BTU burners, matchless ignition, three-sided windscreen, fully adjustable heat dials and folding legs and shelves for portability.

Hansen then prepared the two Dutch ovens. He brought two different styles: a 12-inch standard and a 12-inch deluxe. The deluxe has legs on the bottom of the pan, deeper lid and legs on the lid so it can be used as a skillet. Both Dutch ovens are cast iron. All deluxe models come with a National Park feature on top of the lid such as Yellowstone, Yosemite and the Grand Canyon.

Hansen used Camp Chef liners inside the Dutch oven for reduced/easier cleaning. He also used a Dutch oven cover, which acts as a heat diffusing plate and is an alternative to using briquettes or coal.

Everything we used comes with a carry bag as an accessory and easily fit in the Polaris RZR we rode.

What We Liked

Maybe Hansen is just a really good cook (Camp Chef makes sure all their employees can cook and cooking is actually a part of their interview process) but there wasn’t anything we didn’t like about it. The food was excellent, setup was easy and there was hardly any cleaning needed afterward thanks to liners. When we were finished, we put everything back in its carrying case. It beat a Subway sandwich any day.

What We Didn’t Like

That we got full and couldn’t eat more.
