First Ride: 2014 Yamaha YFZ450R

August 2013 Powersport News

Some will look at the 2014 YFZ450R and at first glance think Yamaha just slapped some bold new graphics on a 2013 unit. Of course, they would be wrong.

After all, Yamaha was the first to introduce a true 450 sport quad, setting the company up to be a leader in that category from the beginning. And with the unveil of the 2014 YFZ450R, it's a position Yamaha apparently doesn't intend to give up.

The 2013 YFZ450R was good but Yamaha knows there is always room for refinement; refinements like improved suspension, more comfortable ergonomics, more power, quick release body panels and adjustable handlebars.

But the big news is more than a refinement ... it's a new concept. The '14 YFZ450 utilizes a new clutch design Yamaha calls A&S (assist and slip). We got a chance to try it out and the benefits were instantly noticeable. We felt less clutch leaver pull before we even put it in gear.  A quick spin on the track also revealed less engine breaking coming into corners.

As the day went on there were a number of changes we noticed. Look for a full review shortly.
