John Day, OR - A city ordinance that will authorize operation of all-terrain vehicles on certain streets within John Day city limits was adopted at the March 12 city council meeting. The ordinance will go into effect April 11.

ATV riders planning to use their vehicles within city limits are encouraged to read the ordinance to acquaint themselves with the rules that apply.

Included are rules stating that ATV riders must be 18 or over and hold a valid ATV permit, and that any passenger under 18 is required to wear a helmet.

Additionally, ATVs may not be operated on state highways-this includes Main Street (Highway 26) and South Canyon Boulevard (Highway 395)-except to cross. ATVs may only be used during daylight hours.

Four councilors-Paul Smith, Don Caldwell, Steve Schuette and Mayor Ron Lundbom- voted in favor of the ordinance. Councilor Doug Gochnour was opposed, and Gene Officer and Donn Willey were absent.
