Moosic Council Bans ATVs From Gas Stations

Moosic, Penn. - Borough council unanimously passed an ordinance earlier this month prohibiting all-terrain vehicles from fueling at gas stations.

The ordinance comes after a June 16 sting operation that cited 46 drivers and confiscated 12 ATVs for trespassing and for driving illegally on the streets, Mayor James Segilia said. Two weeks later, borough police cited another seven, though none faced criminal charges for being repeat offenders, Mr. Segilia added.

Owners of ATVs must now bring a fire marshal-approved container to a gas station to fuel an ATV. This ordinance is the latest development in an effort to curb reckless ATV driving on borough streets, Mr. Segilia said.

"We're not looking to crucify the gas stations," he said. "It's just something extra added to deter them."

Mr. Segilia said it is possible other municipalities will be following suit.

"People recognize that it's a headache," Mr. Segilia said. "Nobody wants it around. They're flying up and down the streets. It's dangerous."

The penalty for filling an ATV at a gas station is $600, solicitor John Brazil said.
