2018 Yamaha Wolverine X4: "That First Ride"

Plenty Of Clearance

Scrubbing off the rocks and other trail debris under our Yamaha Wolverine X4 became common during our time at Brushy Mountain. However, the rock covered sections of steep climbs did not seem like a challenge after half a day of riding in this new machine. Under the Wolverine there are welded-on steel skid panels that helped our machine glide across some of the toughest sections of rocks. The skid plates are also swept up on the sides to give even more ground clearance and also to “narrow” the center belly of the machine in order to reduce high centering the rig.

With up to 10.7 inches of ground clearance down the middle, there weren’t many obstacles that we encountered that would grab hold of the machine for long. Taking all of the hits on the trail, the suspension of the Wolverine has 8.7 inches of travel on the front and 8.9 inches in the rear with the rear shocks being a self-leveling type of shock absorber. Self-leveling shocks work well in keeping the rear suspension at a preset height. Once passengers climb aboard the shocks settle a bit. After a few feet out on the trail the shocks will basically then shuffle fluid around and once again retain the stock height setting. This is also great for working your Wolverine X4 should you ever run out of fun adventures. Let’s hope that’s not the case but if you do need to haul gear or firewood the rear seats will slide forward to give you that extra space for hauling.

The 2018 Yamaha Wolverine X4 is an incredible machine and it gave us hours of fun on the trails at Brushy Mountain. Although this will only give you a general idea of what to expect in your own Wolverine X4 test ride it does not replace the sheer excitement knowing that Yamaha is finding new ways to get you outside with your family.

We are excited to see where this machine can take us in the future.
