BLM Offers Tips For Upcoming Eclipse

August 2017 Powersport News

Idaho Falls, Idaho - Many spectators will be traveling to eastern Idaho for the first time to view the solar eclipse, unaware of the region’s high fire potential. The Bureau of Land Management is urging motorists to avoid parking along roadways on tall, dry grass, which can be ignited with only a spark. Vehicle-caused wildfires threaten lives and property, and spoil the beauty of Idaho’s landscapes.

This year’s wet spring has produced an abundance of grass that is now drying out. Automobile exhaust systems can reach temperatures up to 2,800 degrees F, and pulling off to the side of the road can ignite surrounding vegetation. With the right weather conditions, all motorized vehicles—including cars, pickups, motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles—can be fire starters.

The BLM suggests the following tips to help prevent vehicle-caused wildfires:

  • Avoid parking on dry grass.
  • Report all fires immediately. Keep a cellphone, water, a shovel and a fire extinguisher with you in case a fire starts.
  • If you must pull over in the event of an emergency, try and safely stay on the paved shoulder and avoid pulling onto vegetation.
