KYMCO Recalls UXV 500 Products Due To Fire Hazard

In cooperation with the Consumer Product Safety Commission, Kymco USA is advising the general public of a potential safety defect found on Kymco UXV 500/500i, UXV 500/500i LE and UXV 500/500i SE models. All vehicles produced for model year 2009-2011 and a limited number of 2012 models are affected.

This potential hazard can cause serious injury or death if not repaired by an authorized Kymco dealer. Kymco USA advises owners to stop operation of this utility (UTV) vehicle until the repair has been made.

Potential Hazard:

The nature and extent of the possible defect or the risk is due to an exposed portion of the exhaust system that could allow debris such as leaves or brush or other flammable materials to catch fire and burn. The risk includes the possibility of serious injury or death and or damage to property.

Kymco USA reports about 1,876 vehicles are affected by this recall. To date, three cases have been reported of vehicles that have caught fire causing damage to the vehicle. No injuries or deaths have been reported as a result of these incidents.

Models Affected:

All Kymco UXV models including standard, LE and SE versions produced as 2009 through 2011 and a limited number of model year 2012 as standard, LE and SE models including fuel injected models.

Remedy:

Consumers should discontinue the use of this product and return their UXV vehicle to a Kymco dealer in order for a repair kit to be installed.

The UTV is labeled with the model name on both sides of the rear fender area and the front of the hood with the brand and model name Kymco model names UXV 500, UXV 500 LE, UXV 500 SE, UXV 500i, UXV 500i LE and UXV 500i SE with similar styled decals. These models are distributed in the colors red, blue, black, gray, orange, silver and green. The VIN is located on the frame behind the right front wheel.

Q. What is the problem with my Kymco UXV 500?

A. Kymco has determined that there is an area of the exhaust system that is exposed between the cargo bed and the engine cowling that could allow combustible materials to ignite and cause a fire.

Q. My Kymco UXV appears to be operating okay. Can I continue to use it?

A. No. Even though your product appears to be safe, Kymco is asking all customers to immediately stop using the product and participate in the recall by returning the product for a free repair.

Q. How long will it take for me to receive the repair?

A. Please allow one to two weeks from the date you contacted us. We apologize for any inconvenience and assure you we are working as quickly as possible to repair your product.

Q. Can I repair the product myself?

A. No. We urge you not to attempt to repair the product yourself, due to the nature of the potential risk. Please return the vehicle to any authorized Kymco dealer immediately for a free repair.
